Local High School Student Receives New Richmond Utilities Scholarship

Local student Heather Pitzen has won New Richmond Utilities’ Public Power scholarship for high school students.

“As a municipally owned utility, we believe that providing educational opportunities for promising local students is a sound investment in our community,” says Dennis Horner, City Administrator/Utility Manager. “We congratulate Heather on her accomplishments and extend our best wishes for a successful future.”

The $750 scholarship is presented to a high school senior who plans to attend a two-year technical college or a four-year university. The scholarship program is designed to promote awareness of New Richmond’s community-owned utility, increase awareness of the value of public power, and to inform customers about the benefits of their community-owned municipal utility.

To be eligible, students or their parents or guardians must be customers of New Richmond Utilities. Applicants are judged on a variety of criteria, including their work on an essay titled, “Our Community Connection: The Value of Our Municipal Utility,” academic and extracurricular achievement, work and volunteer experience, and future career goals.

Heather, who is currently a senior at New Richmond High School, will attend Northwestern College in St. Paul, MN to study Elementary Education.
